NEET UG 2025-26

NATIONAL ELIGIBILITY CUM ENTRANCE TEST (UG)

 

The National Medical Commission Act, 2019, which received presidential assent on August 8, 2019, mandates a uniform National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) for admission to undergraduate medical courses in all medical institutions, including AIIMS, JIPMER, and AIIMS-like institutions. (NMC Act, 2019, Appendix XIV)

 

NEET (UG) Admissions – Seat Distribution

 

Admissions to undergraduate medical courses through NEET (UG) apply to various quotas:

  • All India Quota (15%)
  • State Government Quota
  • Central Institutions & Deemed Universities
  • NRI/Management Quota in Private Medical, Dental, Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and Homeopathy Colleges
  • Central Pool Quota
     

Additionally, NRI and Management Quota seats in private medical colleges will be allotted based on NEET-UG merit.


NEET Requirement for Foreign Medical Education

Indian Citizens and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) who intend to study Medicine, Dental, Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, or Homeopathy abroad must qualify NEET (UG) before enrolling.


NEET Counseling & Admission Process

  • MCC (Medical Counseling Committee) conducts counseling for the 15% All India Quota, Deemed Universities, ESIC, AFMC, AIIMS, JIPMER, BHU, and AMU.
  • State authorities handle counseling for State Government and Private Colleges.
  • NEET (UG) results may also be used by Central and State Governments for admissions as per their regulations.

During counseling, eligibility and documents are verified by respective authorities. The National Testing Agency (NTA) bears no responsibility for document authenticity.


Role of NTA in NEET (UG)

The National Testing Agency (NTA), established by the Government of India, is responsible for conducting national-level entrance exams. Since 2019, NTA has been conducting NEET-UG under the directive of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).

NTA’s role is limited to:

  • Inviting applications
  • Conducting the exam
  • Declaring results
  • Providing All India Rank (AIR) to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare


Admissions and seat allocations are conducted by central and state-level counselling authorities based on NEET-UG scores.
